Photo Essay Reflection

One thing in some of the photo essays that i liked were the introduction words and the music that went really well with the theme. I liked the short sentences because it gave an idea of where the story was going and it made a big impact depending on how it was worded. The pictures did not stay up too long, which was good too.
I didn't like how sometimes there were too many pictures of one thing and then there wasnt enough time to catch other perspectives or the ending of the story.
I would put more animation into the pictures to make it go with the different school ages and make an introduction.
It was hard at times when you didn't know where to go, but with an idea in your head, it was easy to piece the pictures together and make a story. It was fun and it was not as hard or complicated as making a video, but it still could have had the same impact. Telling a story with pictures really leads people to reflect on what they're seeing and not just watch it for fun. In my opinion, a picture essay is almost the same as a movie because they both tell a story, just in different ways.

My Opinion of PowerPoint

PowerPoint is for the most part used in the wrong fashion. PowerPoints are mostly presented with bullet points and are just read to the audience. Bullet points give information in little pieces that are very hard to process for the people listening. PowerPoint does not help much with the default settings on a title and automatic bullet points every time the "Enter" key is pressed. Not many people have been informed about the dangers of boring and unhelpful powerpoint presentations. PowerPoint is not a bad thing in itself, but people have made it into a negative tool by using it in the wrong way. PowerPoing gives an excuse for 5 points a slide that are read to an audience who isn't listening because they have already read the slide.
If I were a teacher, i would use PowerPoing sparingly. The application can be useful for certain subjects, however, I like Tom Creed's idea of interactive things in the classroom using "cyberspace". PowerPoints all focus on the teacher, however, emailing and blogging and sites such as Moodle are interactive and really concentrate on what the student can learn; not what the teacher can teach. I think PowerPoints should really be used to tell a story. Interactive learning in PowerPoint presentations using action buttons or something like that, are the only thing I would use for in-class learning. Using bullet points for myself and my own notes are fine and maybe even for notes for the students to look over at home, however, PowerPoints are not beneficial to teaching.

The First Five Slides: Unlocking the Story Buried in Your Presentation

  • bullet points are just a list
  • lists don't give any content...they are just dry
  • tell a story with a powerpoint presentation
  • use powerpoint to communicate a story like Hollywood
  • there should be a setting, a main character, a conflict, a desired state, and a solution

PowerPoint No, Cyberspace Yes vs. Learning to Love PowerPoint

According to Tom Creed, PowerPoint is not productive for teaching at all. Email or any electronic communication is the way to get students involved. Creed is all for technology and digital education, however, he believes that PowerPoint is not the kind of technology that promotes interactive learning. PowerPoint presentations are "teacher-controlled", "teacher-centered", and do not tell about what the students are getting from the lecture. Email and electronic communication are "student-controlled", "student-centered", and inform the teacher about student progress and understanding. Teaching should be all about the students' learning, not concentrated on the teacher and what they can teach.
On the other hand, David Byrne encourages people to use PowerPoint and finds many positive aspects in the application. PowerPoint is convenient and fairly easy to use, which has become the definition of something good. Quality does't matter as much as simplicity in a set and organized way. For content, Byrne did not find much use in it, however, for art, PowerPoint became very useful. Creating interesting art can be used with PowerPoint. Other than that, Byrne found nothing revolutionary about the product.

Bullet Points Kill

In the article called Bullet Points Kill by Cliff Atkinson, the PowerPoint application is defined differently than ever before. A PowerPoint presentation with bullet points does not make a presentation. It is harder to understand. This is because one topic is fragmented into smaller parts which are the bullet points themselves. Bullet points just separate one idea and then most likely get mixed up in a person's brain. A way of overcoming this is by a technique that is illustrated by Atkinson. One should get a piece of paper and draw a vertical line down the middle. On the left side, the title and bullet points should be written. One thing that can encompass all of the thoughts on the one slide is written down on the right side of the vertical line. The pictures, movies, or maybe few words that are thought of on the right side are what should be in a PowerPoint presentation. Atkinson proves that there is a reason PowerPoint is in landscape form like TV's and movie screens. These three things should all be alike by the fact that they can "extract understanding" from more than one brain, more than one person, but large groups of people.
